Mount Brooke named

Huntingdon Gleaner

Dated:

The memory of Willie Brooke, a grandson of Mrs. Alex. Cameron of this village has been given single honor of the Geographic Board in bestowing his name on a lofty peak on the Alaskan-Yukon boundary. As reported in the Gleaner at the time, young Brooke was among the first to enlist and was taken prisoner in the second Battle of Ypres, this month two years ago. The Germans ordered him with other prisoners to work in a munitions factory. He refused, declaring he would not make shells to kill his countrymen. This was called insubordination, and he was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment in the Cologne fortress, where he suffered much until his death relieved him March 13, 1917, he dying of pneumonia. Willie was a born artist and with a few strokes of the pencil could hit off the characteristics of those around him. He was engaged in that capacity on a New York Journal when he left for Canada to enlist.
