Additional Service Notes
There is a notice dated May 16, 1940 stating:
1. I am directed to advise that, since the above named Officer has been guilty of a breach of flying regu1tions and local rules which resulted in his crash, a medical board is to be convened and his retirement proceeded with,
2. May this Headquarters be advised, please,a s to what time Pilot Officer Hampson arrives at his home in order that gazette action may be completed.
3, This Officer is to be informed that, should he so desire, favourable consideration will be given to his enlistment for training as a pilot under the Joint Air Training Plan.
It appears that he was involved in a flying accident on Jan 13, 1940 while flying near Aurora, Ontario and suffered a concusion and various facial injuries.
Very little information about his death available from service file.
Records indicate that on 15 August 1941, a twin engine Whitley V night bomber (serial Z6877) operated by No. 102 Squadron was shot down. Sgt D. E. J. Hampson was killed in that aircraft, while other crew members were taken prisoner. The crash occurred near Quakenbrück, Germany. Though specific mission details for 15 August are not widely documented online, the crash near Quakenbrück on that night supports that it was part of a night bombing operation over northern Germany, possibly on the Ruhr region. The 102 Squadron wsa operating from RAF Topcliffe, North Yorkshire, England, near Thirsk, North Yorkshire.
On the night of 14–15 August 1941, Bomber Command was targeting industrial and rail targets in Germany, possibly the Ruhr or northwestern Germany.
Sgt. Hampson's Whitley was likely shot down on the return leg, based on the crash location near Quakenbrück, which is west of Bremen — consistent with returning aircraft being intercepted by night fighters or flak.
